Natural Health in Australia a Booming Future

Although the data below is out-dated, the trend has continued; more and more people understand the benefit of a healthy lifestyle and are seeking Complementary Medicine support.

In the next ten years baby boomers alone will increase their spending on existing health and wellness based services about 5 times over. This is the industry of the future; it is an industry being created by peoples growing demand for more effective health products and solutions.   -  Courier Mail (5th May, 2003)

According to Analysts the Complementary Health Industry is worth between $1.2 and $2 billion per annum.  Australians are becoming the most habitual and avid users of alternative medicine in the World.  Over 60% of Australians have used alternative medicine treatments or products, with 52% of Australian households using some form or alternative medicines, products or services regularly.

Found in a study conducted in July and August of 2002 that the annual bill of the Australian Alternative Medicines and Therapies Industry could easily grow to be $2.3 Billion in the coming years, projecting growth for the industry at over 15% per annum in Australia. Edward Ernst, Professor of Complementary Medicine at the University of Exeter, wrote in the Medical Journal of Australia that "about half the general population in developed countries use complementary and alternative medicine (CAM)."[44] Survey results released in May 2004 by the National Centre for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, part of the United States National Institutes of Health, found that in 2002 62.1% of adults in the country had used some form of CAM in the past 12 months and 75% across lifespan.

In 2004, a survey of nearly 1,400 U.S. hospitals found that more than one in four offered alternative and complementary therapies such as acupuncture, homeopathy, and massage therapy. A 2008 survey of US hospitals by Health Forum, a subsidiary of the American Hospital Association, found that more than 37 percent of responding hospitals indicated they offer one or more alternative medicine therapies, up from 26.5 percent in 2005.

Demographic Characteristics
Females account for 62% of people who had visited a complementary health therapist.  The proportion of the population who visited complementary health therapists was highest between the ages 25 and 64 years. People aged less than 18 years accounted for 9% of those who had consulted a complementary health therapist. These 66,000 people aged less than 18 years included 46,000 who had consulted a chiropractor or osteopath and 21,000 who had consulted a naturopath, acupuncturist, herbalist or traditional healer. [22]
